You can head north of New Orleans to Manchac Swamp, site of the blood red hanging tree and the cemetery that arose after the Great West Indies Storm of 1915, a gale that created a 20-foot tidal wave which swept 300 people to their deaths. The swamp is also home to alligators, raccoons, wild boars, nutrias, snakes, turtles, black bears and a wide variety of exotic birds.
Or, go south across the Mississippi River to Jean Lafitte/Bayou Barataria preserve--Cajun Country--where the pirate Jean Lafitte hid his booty. See an almost 2,000 year-old Indian Burial Mound and Cajun Fishing Villages as you cruise the swamp in pursuit of Miss Vicki, Alligator Queen of Bayou Barataria, and other wildlife pointed out by your local guide/Captain.
